Bolivar Chamber Of Commerce
Those who know Bolivar know it’s no ordinary destination. Nestled just northeast of Galveston, Bolivar Peninsula is its own Texas treasure. A national refuge for coastal birds and fishing, the area has become a vacation destination for families and tourists across the state. With beautiful vacation homes, peaceful beaches and local fun—some say it’s Texas’ best kept secret.
About Bolivar Peninsula
About 27 miles long and 3-1/2 miles wide, Bolivar Peninsula was named in honor of Simon Bolivar for his fight to free these lands from Spanish rule. Our five residential communities include Crystal Beach, Port Bolivar, Caplen, Gilchrist and High Island, and at the northwest side, the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.
You’ll find the historic Bolivar Lighthouse, built in 1872, which once guided ships entering Galveston Bay. It served for 61 years before being retired in 1933.Each of these areas is rich with history and unique in beachfront, fishing waters, birding and small-town charm. The population more than doubles during the summer months as owners of beach homes and tourists arrive to enjoy the beach, bay sunsets, fishing and relaxation.
Bolivar Beaches
All 27 miles of Bolivar Peninsula are beachfront. Crystal Beach is the most inhabited part of the peninsula, but you can find peaceful stretches of beach all throughout the year. Most neighborhoods have thru-streets with beach access. Some areas may get more visitors during the high season, but you’ll find more family-oriented areas the farther east you go. Driving on the beach, campfires, grills, beach camping and beach combing are permitted on Bolivar’s beaches.
For day-trippers, the most popular roads to use to get to the beach include Rettilon Road (closest to ferry landing), Crystal Beach Road, Kahla Drive and Stingaree Road.
Fishing
Whether you prefer guided fishing trips, competitive offshore tournaments or simply a day of peaceful kayak fishing, the peninsula is the place to find some of the state’s best fishing.
Boating
Boating is a great way to travel and see the peninsula. Bolivar has several areas to launch and park your boat. Marinas include Steve’s Landing Restaurant, Stingaree Restaurant & Marina, Bolivar Yacht Basin, and Rollover Pass.
Birding
The entire Bolivar Peninsula is part of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. The Houston Audubon Society bird sanctuaries like Bolivar Flats and High Island are known throughout the world for the winter and spring migrations. Observe, photograph and enjoy!
